Cary-Grove notches its first win in convincing fashion
Once the touchdowns started for Cary-Grove, they kept on coming.
After struggling on offense the first 2 weeks of the season, the Trojans scored 7 times and racked up more than 400 yards of offense in beating Woodstock, 48-6, in Fox Valley Conference crossover action at Al Bohrer Field in Cary on Saturday afternoon.
Ryan Mahoney and Andrew Sobeski scored twice each to lead the defending Class 6A champs to the Homecoming victory.
"The ball was spread around, the line blocked extremely well and, overall, I was extremely happy with how our quarterback threw the ball," said Cary-Grove coach Bruce Kay.
Corey Lakotas didn't throw the ball often but he was efficient, completing 3 of 5 for 74 yards. Kay wasn't kidding about spreading the ball around, either. Nick Jiminez (91), Mahoney (84), Patrick O'Malley (70), and Sobeski (53) all had more than 50 yards for the Trojans (1-2). Four other backs contributed to C-G's total of 354 rushing yards.
The Blue Streaks (1-2) tried to surprise the Trojans with an onside kick to start the game. The strategy backfired when Cary-Grove recovered the kick and proceeded to move 52 yards in 8 plays for the score. Sobeski went in from 4 yards out to finish the drive.
Sobeski scored on another short run to make it 13-0 after one period.
Mahoney and Connor Carlson added second-quarter touchdowns.
Woodstock finally got on the board on Anton Abdulai's 30-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.
Cary-Grove kept up the pace with 2 more touchdowns in the third quarter. Mahoney added his second on an 8-yard run and Lakotas took one in himself.
Jiminez finished the Trojans' scoring, breaking free on an 85-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Abdulai's second field goal of the game completed the scoring.
CaryGrove's defense dominated for a second straight week. The Trojans gave up some yards, but they mostly came in the second half when the game was out of reach. They kept the Blue Streaks out of the end zone.
They harassed Woodstock quarterback Pat Santucci into 12-of-33 passing with 3 interceptions, including 2 by John Pearl.
"We're continuing to improve, and that's what we want to see out of those guys," Kay said. "That's what we're looking for."
