Hosta show at Woodstock nursery

A Hosta Happening will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28 at Rich's Foxwillow Pines Nursery Inc., 11618 McConnell Road, Woodstock. All proceeds will benefit Heifer International. The event is sponsored by Rich Eyre, Susan Eyre and Margaret Eyre, the 92-year-old "Hosta Queen."

The Hosta Happening has several hundred varieties of hostas at $5 and up for sale to benefit Heifer International. Heifer International is a nonprofit, humanitarian organization dedicated to ending world hunger and poverty and caring for the earth. It provides livestock, trees, training and other resources to help struggling families build sustainable futures. Heifer International has provided food and income producing animals to more than 8.5 million impoverished families in 125 countries in the last 65-plus years.

Rich Eyre worked with this organization in the Peace Corps 42 years ago in Bolivia. Rich and Susan Eyre served six years on the board of trustees of the Heifer Foundation.

Margaret Eyre, the Hosta Queen, coordinates volunteers to help divide and sell the hostas. Volunteers will be available to answer any questions about Heifer International on the day of the sale. Refreshments will be served.

At 11 a.m., Rich Eyre will give an overview of Heifer International and its work worldwide. Mike Nowak will give his presentation, "I'm Not Really a Garden Expert, I Just Play One on the Radio" at 1 p.m.

His midlife adventure is gardening. He is a radio celebrity with a gardening show on Sunday mornings on WCPT and previously on WGN. He has interviewed many horticultural experts on his show who have taught him valuable lessons about gardening, environmental responsibility and life in general.
