State wants no bail for Kane Co. serial burglary suspect

Kane County prosecutors asked a judge Thursday to revoke the bail of a suspected burglar who was accused of re-offending the last time he was let out of jail.

Gregory A. Behrendt, 56, of the 1200 block of Winners Cup Circle, St. Charles, faces more than a dozen counts of residential burglary and related offenses in Geneva and St. Charles. His bail is set at $3 million.

On Thursday, Assistant State's Attorney Kelly Orland made a motion to revoke Behrendt's bail after the defense argued it should be reduced so he can post bond and return to supporting his ailing wife.

Orland said she intends to argue at a hearing Wednesday that state law requires Behrendt to be held without bail because he was charged with additional "forcible" felonies while out on bond in June.

Judge Allen M. Anderson said he was prepared to cut Behrendt's bail to $150,000 and add electronic home monitoring as a bond condition. But he postponed a decision until both sides could argue their positions on revoking bail entirely at next week's hearing.

Behrendt was first arrested in April in connection with a burglary spree on St. Charles' northeast side.

In June, after being released on bond, he was rearrested and charged in connection with additional burglaries in both St. Charles and Geneva.

Although Behrendt lives in a house valued at more than $500,000, his attorney said he "doesn't have much money," and spends what he does have on his wife, who has medical issues.

"He pays all the bills, all the expenses," Salvatore Miglore said.

Miglore said his client would comply with electronic home monitoring and other conditions of bond should he eventually be released from jail to await trial.
