Vizquel gets a rest, and considers his future

Omar Vizquel was held out of the White Sox' starting lineup Wednesday night for the second straight game.

Just call it a well-deserved rest for the 43-year-old infielder, as well as a matchup issue.

The Mariners started a left-hander (Jason Vargas) for the second straight game, and the switch-hitting Vizquel is batting just .231 from the right side. Vizquel is batting .286 left-handed.

Two months ago, Vizquel was frustrated with his lack of playing time. But the former Gold Glove shortstop stepped in when third baseman Mark Teahen fractured his finger, and Vizquel has been going strong ever since.

While he once appeared to be set on retiring at the end of the season, Vizquel's regular playing time and positive results have him seriously thinking about a return in 2011.

"It's hard to say," Vizquel said. "Right now I'm going week by week, day by day. I think the way I've been playing right now is telling me that I can maybe give it a shot another year. My body is feeling fresh, it's feeling OK. I maintain myself pretty good with the gym and the diets and I think that's going to really tell me at the end of the year what I'm going to do."

Danks is back: After missing two weeks with a hip injury, Jordan Danks returned to Class AAA Charlotte's lineup Wednesday night and was 1-for-3.

For the season, Danks is batting .243 with 6 home runs and 32 RBI while striking out 112 times in 321 at-bats.

Also at Charlotte, catcher Tyler Flowers is batting .218 and third baseman Brent Morel is batting .284. Jeremy Reed hit 2 solo home runs in Wednesday's 7-5 loss at Louisville.

On Monday, first-round draft pick Chris Sale pitched 1 inning and allowed 1 run on 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out the side. The left-hander has a 3.86 ERA in 5 appearances since being promoted from Class A Winston-Salem to Charlotte.

Good cause: White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper is helping raise funds for two charities, St. Baldrick's Children Cancer Research and Journey Church in Tennessee, with a charity wine.

"Coopernet," a 2009 California cabernet, is available throughout the Chicago area and $20 per case goes to the charities. Go to windycitysoda.com for participating locations.
