Fire guts building at Ind. church camp

MILFORD, Ind. -- Fire gutted the main building at a church camp in northern Indiana that goes back to the 1920s.

The fire at Camp Alexander Mack near the town of Milford broke out about 4 a.m. Sunday with 14 staff members sleeping inside. Milford Fire Chief Brian Haines says one man was trapped until firefighters were able to bring him down by ladder from a second-story window.

The camp about 30 miles southeast of South Bend is affiliated with the Church of the Brethren.

Haines said it took firefighters about five hours to extinguish the blaze since the three-story building had undergone many renovations over the years.

Camp chairman Michael Dilling says its scheduled summer events will go on as usual.
