Cougars, Flyers capture wins

Fueled by an 8-run rally in the seventh inning, the host Kane County Cougars stormed past the Beloit Snappers 11-6 Monday at Elfstrom Stadium in Geneva.

The Cougars (5-6, 37-43) evened the series with Beloit and improved to 3-2 on their six-game homestand, knocking out 12 hits. Every Cougar collected either a hit or an RBI. It was the third time this season the Cougars scored a season-high 8 runs in one inning.

The Cougars trailed 6-2 entering the bottom of the seventh and had stranded 10 runners.

Then Chris Affinito, who rejoined the team Monday, belted a 3-run homer off Peter Kennelly to make it 6-5. The Cougars loaded the bases against Matt Tone (2-3). Conner Crumbliss walked to tie it, and Jose Crisotomo and Tyreace House both scored on the same wild pitch for an 8-6 lead. Crumbliss came home via another wild pitch, and Myrio Richard nailed an RBI single for a 10-6 edge. The Cougars sent 11 men to the plate in the inning and added 1 more in the eighth on Jason Christian's RBI groundeout.

Winner Jose Pina (1-1) gave up 2 runs in 2 relief innings, and Max Peterson worked 2 perfect innings to wrap it up.

Flyers edge RiverHawks: Ron Borquin hit a tie-breaking home run in the sixth inning as the Schaumburg Flyers beat the Rockford RiverHawks 4-3 at Alexian Field.

Joe Nowicki also homered for the Flyers, who beat the RiverHawks for just the third time in nine meetings this year.

Flyers reliever Brian McCullough (2-0) held the RiverHawks to 1 hit over the final 31/3 innings to earn the win.

Flyers pitcher Dustin Glant and catcher Richard Mercado were selected to the Northern League all-star team that will play the Golden League all-stars July 14 at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Ariz.

Fielders fall in shootout: Lake County couldn't keep pace with the Joliet Jackhammers, who hit a season-high 5 home runs to earn an 11-9 victory over the Fielders 11-9 in Northern League action before 3,320 at Fielders Stadium in Zion.

Fielders third baseman Amos Ramon (.313 batting average), and left fielder Josh Short (12 home runs) were named to the Northern League all-star team.
