St. Charles Adult Activity Center to hold open house

The St. Charles Park District's Adult Activity Center will partner with Bickford Assisted Living and Memory Care of St. Charles to host an open house membership drive from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 25. Guests will be entertained by both live bands and DJ-announced music from the 1940s to '60s at Bickford's facilities, 2875 Campton Hills Road in St. Charles.

"I think it's going to be a great time," said Rebecca Riedstra, community relations director for Bickford of St. Charles. "Our residents like having fun, and we've had a good partnership with the St. Charles Park District in promoting events such as these."

The free event is open to the public.

"With these music genres, we hope to attract seniors and the adult children of those seniors, but if someone wants to bring their whole family - the kids, mom and dad, as well as grandma and grandpa - they're certainly welcome," said Riedstra.

With their mutual focus on meaningful and entertaining activities geared toward active older adults, the two facilities strive to create a nurturing, supportive environment that both challenges and captivates its audience.

Located within the Pottawatomie Community Center at 8 North Ave. in St. Charles, the Adult Activity Center provides a variety of activities and drop-in programs for people ages 50 and older. Events are available every day of the week. The center boasts a computer and media lounge with Internet access, game rooms outfitted with card and board games, a popular Wii interactive system, and a billiards table. Membership in the Adult Activity Center is $6 per year for St. Charles Park District residents, and $9 for nonresidents. Guests are welcome at $5 per day.

Typical activities include clubs devoted to card games such as bridge and pinochle, a monthly book discussion, and crafts such as the weekly quilting club. Fitness-oriented activities include a seniors golf tournament at Pottawatomie's 9-hole course, discounted daily admission to Swanson Pool, pickleball, table tennis and tai chi classes.

Since opening its doors in May of 2009, Bickford Assisted Living and Memory Care has been teaming with the Adult Activity Center to provide outings for its residents. Three levels of care are available at the facility, including independent living, assisted living, and memory care. Typical activities include outings and walks, scrapbooking and crafts, social and educational programs for both residents and families.
