Sox farmhand Viciedo showing his HR power

DETROIT - Class AAA Charlotte's Dayan Viciedo continues performing like a hitter that can bring some needed help to the White Sox' offense.

The 21-year-old first baseman hit his ninth home run of the season in Monday night's 5-4 loss to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Since May 1, Viciedo is batting .321 with 5 home runs and 11 RBI in 16 games.

While Viciedo is thriving, the Sox' other top prospects at Charlotte are struggling.

Second baseman C.J. Retherford is batting .216, center fielder Jordan Danks is batting .241 and catcher Tyler Flowers is at .257.

"I thought when we left spring training there were a lot of guys who would be better than they are right now," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "I just worry about this ballclub and I have a lot of things to worry about here before I worry about what's going on down there."

Feeling a draft: The White Sox have the 13th overall pick in the first-year player draft, which runs June 7-9.

The Sox are expected to take a collegiate starting pitcher such as Florida Gulf Coast left-hander Chris Sale or Texas right-hander Brandon Workman.

But the Sporting News has the Sox taking Arkansas third baseman Zack Cox, saying the draft-eligible sophomore "is showing scouts he can consistently make contact. Might be college's best hitter."

Manager Ozzie Guillen's youngest son, Ozney, is wrapping his senior year at Monsignor Pace High School in Miami, where he was an all-state selection this season.

Ozney has already signed with South Florida, but the Cubs and Colorado Rockies are two of the teams that have been scouting him and the outfielder might pass up college if he's drafted early.

Beckham sits: As expected, slumping second baseman Gordon Beckham (.188) didn't play against the Tigers Wednesday.

Omar Vizquel filled in and went 2-for-5 with 1 RBI.

Beckham is expected to be back in the lineup Wednesday when the Sox open a two-game series against the Angels at U.S. Cellular Field.

This is the second time this season Guillen has put Beckham on the bench, but manager Ozzie Guillen said he's not singling anyone out.

"You look at who is having a good season and maybe it's a few pitchers and a couple of hitters," Guillen said. "I think it was unfair to say Gordon was going to be the guy on this ballclub. He's not. He never will be. To me it's about the team and not about one guy. He's never gone through this, but he's very professional and handling this very well."
