Only Williams knows when changes may come

DETROIT - If he finds the right deal, White Sox general manager Kenny Williams could trade Jake Peavy in a moment's notice.

He could ask captain Paul Konerko to waive his no-trade clause and move him, too.

Or, Williams could ignore the Sox' 15-22 record and try adding some needed offensive punch.

"Kenny does stuff very quietly," manager Ozzie Guillen said Monday before the White Sox and Tigers were rained out at Comerica Park. "Maybe the rumors won't go anywhere, but all of a sudden he makes a move and it's, 'Ozzie, this guy got traded.' Or, 'We'll get this guy tomorrow.' That's the way he's doing stuff."

Williams isn't on the Sox' road trip that started last Tuesday in Minnesota. But it doesn't take seeing his scowl in person to know the GM is not at all happy with the slow start.

Guillen and Williams did talk after Sunday's 5-3 loss at Kansas City, and it looks like the White Sox are going to stay pat for the time being.

"He said it's too early right now," Guillen said of the conversation. "But in the meanwhile, listen, I've worked for Kenny for seven years and if he sees something he likes out there that will help this organization right now and in the future, he will do it."

Does that mean Williams is really listening to rumored inquiries from the Texas Rangers about catcher A.J. Pierzynski?

At U.S. Cellular Field on May 3, Williams said he'd wait another "30 days" before shaking things up. It looks like that timetable is still in play, according to a message Guillen received from his boss.

"He texted me - 'Right now I'm doing some stuff with the minor leagues and the draft. Tell those guys (media) I'm not going to trade anybody,' " Guillen said.

Pierzynski was unfazed by the trade rumor.

"There's not much I can say about it," Pierzynski said. "I'm playing for White Sox and trying to help the team win."

That is Guillen's main goal, and he still believes the Sox can win with the players they have.

Subtraction is undoubtedly coming if they don't start stringing some wins together soon. As for addition, Guillen doesn't see a need for new blood.

"That's why it kills me every day," Guillen said. "I can say, 'OK, let's point this finger at these people.' No, we don't have enough fingers to point at what the (bleep) we're doing, how bad we're playing. We don't. I thought the pitching staff was pretty good, all of a sudden I look at it and say, 'Wow, hmmm, not that good.' We're playing good, just not winning games. Getting the big hit, catching the big break.

"If we put a couple days winning streak or a week and come out of this, I think we can turn this thing around. In the meanwhile, how many times have you heard me saying this? Thirty times since spring training? Nothing has come out of it right now."
