Castonzo nets national acclaim at Boston College

Former Lake Zurich standout Anthony Castonzo has been tabbed as a first-team preseason All-American choice at Boston College by Lindy's Sports magazine.

A 6-foot-7, 295-pound senior, Castonzo is an All-ACC first-teamer at left tackle.

He has started all 41 games in his Eagles career and is expected to be a high draft choice in 2011, according to the magazine.

He has been nominated by the school to be a Rhodes scholar.

The magazine describes him with having " long arms, light feet, and punch to be impenetrable as a pass protector."

Water polo

Sarah Denny, a Mundelein High School graduate, was the coach for Carthage, which recently took third place in the Collegiate III national championship held at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center in Kenosha, Wis.

Baseball camp

Libertyville High School coach Jim Schurr will host the camp with his staff and current college players. The camp will be broken down for ages 7-14 Little League youth and travel players. It will be conducted from June 7 to June 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Butler Lake Little League Complex.

There will be three different sessions for overall skill, pitching and catching.

Overall skills will focus on the fundamentals of hitting, throwing, infield and outfield skills for each position as well as base running.

Pitching will focus on proper technique from the wind-up and stretch positions, holding runners, fielding and other mechanics from this position.

Catching will focus on a proper stance, receiving, giving signs, blocking and throwing.

Camp fees are: Skills ($90), Pitching ($40), Catching ($30) or Skills, Pitching and Catching ($150)

Football

Aaron Lewandowski, a standout athlete at Lake Zurich High School, will continue his career at Augustana.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound tight end and defensive end will join coach Jim Barnes' Viking program after enrolling this fall.

Lewandowski earned two varsity letters for the Bears and coach Bryan Stortz, who played at Augustana from 1996-99.

He had 15 receptions for 225 yards and 1 touchdown for a Lake Zurich team that went 9-4 and reached the semifinals of the IHSA Class 7A playoffs. He was an All-North Suburban Conference selection and member of Lake Zurich's 2007 team that finished 13-1 and won the Class 7A state championship.

Lewandowski lettered twice in coach John Zarr's basketball program at Lake Zurich as well. He was the Bears' leading scorer and rebounder as a senior, with averages of 11.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per contest.

Women's softball

Augustana senior Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine), who led the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin in batting average, hits, home runs, total bases and slugging percentage, has been named the league's 2010 Player of the Year.

The school's career home run record holder (30) hit .489 in CCIW play and pounded 5 home runs. She drove in 10 runs, missing the conference's triple

crown by three RBI. Her 22 hits, 38 total bases and .844 slugging percentage also led the league.

Quaritsch, who caught and played third base, was a team-best .411 hitter overall with 10 homers and 31 RBI. She also led the Vikings in slugging (. 718) and one-base percentage (. 468).

Her 30 career home runs are 11 more than anyone else in the program's history. She was a first team All-CCIW selection for the third consecutive season.

• Dayton senior Molly Meyer (Elk Grove) finished her senior year by going 6 for 8 at George Washington during a double header. She also had 5 stolen bases.

For the second season, Meyer was an Academic All-Conference selection.

During her career, Meyer broke five long-standing records.

Last season, she broke the school single-season record for runs scored (44) and she now holds the career record (132) for runs scored.

Her 55 hits this season gave her 197 career hits, breaking a record that dated back to 2000.

Meyer also shattered the career (64) and single-season (34) records for stolen bases. She ranked 21st in the country for stolen bases per game (. 62) and third in the A-10 for total stolen bases (34), fifth in the A-10 for runs scored (39), and in the top 15 for batting average (. 333).

Meyer was named Most Valuable Player for the second year in a row and she was the Offensive Player of the Year.

Meyer was named to the LOWE'S Senior Class Top 30 list, honoring the top softball athletes in the country.

Meyer was also named to the 10-person Academic All-Conference Team. She carries a 3.53 GPA in marketing and Spanish.

• Junior pitcher Claire Voris (Barrington) earned 2010 University Athletic Association Player of the Year accolades for the second straight year.

Voris is the fourth player in school history to earn Player of the Year honors and just the second (Laurel Sagartz, 2004-07) to earn the award in multiple seasons.

Voris, a three-time first-team all-UAA honoree and 2010 UAA Most Valuable Player, has an 18-6 overall record with a 1.99 earned run average in 22 starts for the Bears. She has struck out a conference-best 202 batters in 1612/3 innings while holding opponents to a .220 batting average.

Voris is also having a career year at the plate, batting .385 with four home runs and 25 RBI.

• Illinois Wesleyan's Kayla Mahoney (Elk Grove) earned College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin second team all-conference recognition.

Mahoney, also a two-time Academic All-Conference recipient with a major in Chemistry, received the award with a .333 BA and .383 OBP and also a 1.000 fielding percentage.

The Illinois Wesleyan softball team is ranked No. 1 with the best team defense statistics in the country.

• Central College junior pitcher Kiley Lythberg (Prospect) was named to the second-team of the Iowa Conference all-conference list.

Lythberg is a second-team pick for the second straight year. She is 19-7 with a 2.18 earned run average, striking out 110 batters in 1472/3 innings while walking 51. She's also one of Central's top hitters with a .368 average, hitting six home runs and driving in 31 runs.

Central is 30-12 and earned its 22nd NCAA Division III tournament berth.

Fire tryouts

The Chicago Fire Soccer Club has announced the tryout dates for its 2010/11 Academy teams.

Set for May 24-25 at Toyota Park, the tryout sessions will be held for players at the U18, U16 and for the first time, U14 age levels.
