Scouting the boys gymnastics state meet

What: 59th annual state meet

Where: Lincoln-Way East High School, Frankfort

When: Elite Eight team competition at 6 p.m. today. On Saturday, individual all-around competition begins at noon with the individual finals at 7 p.m.

Automatic team qualifiers: Stevenson (163.650), Lincoln-Way East Co-op (160.550), Wheaton North Co-op (156.250), Downers Grove North (153.100), Hinsdale Central (149.850)

At-large qualifiers: Conant (156.250), Glenbard North (148.700), Highland Park Co-op (148.300)

The favorite: Can Stevenson earn its first state title in six years? The Patriots have become the favorites to win their fourth state title in school history after recording a three-peat from 2002-04.

The 2002 title team has the second-highest score in IHSA history under the current scoring format with a 167.1.

It appears unlikely anyone will reach that lofty total today.

With three all-arounders capable of scoring in the mid-50s, a fourth gymnast near 50 and senior all-arounder Lukasz Adamczyk a title contender in the all-around, the Pats' depth has been phenomenal this spring under sixth-year coach Mike Farina.

Head-to-head: Lincoln-Way co-op defeated the Patriots at the Mundelein Invite, but the Griffins only scored a 160.55 at sectionals compared to a state-high 163.65 for Stevenson. Lincoln-Way's No. 2 all-arounder broke his foot just days before sectionals.

Conant outlook: The Cougars have the inside track for third place with Wheaton North's top all-arounder now out due to recent emergency surgery.

Coach Paul Kim is hoping the Cougars can hit a 160, which has been their goal for the last few weeks. Their season-high of 159.95 was in a dual meet with Schaumburg.

"Stevenson looked really good when I saw them at our sectional," said Kim, whose team won the Mid-Suburban League championship with a 155.95. and was second (156.25) at its own sectional behind Stevenson. "Our goal is 160. We're not going there (state meet) to beat any one team. We are going to do our best to reach our goal. If we do that, wherever that score falls, we'll be happy with our placing."

The Pommel Prince: Rolling Meadows John Scallon gives the area one of its best chances to win an individual crown. The Minnesota recruit, who began the event just two years ago in coach Mike Costa's Power Gymnastics physical education course at Meadows, has hit a personal high of 9.8. He tied for fourth in the state meet last year with a 9.1.

"He looks good," said Conant coach Paul Kim. "The only time I ever saw him miss was at our conference meet. He should be right there competing for the title."

Fantastic Floor Man: Barrington senior Kellen O'Connor is seeking his fourth straight top-seven finish in the state floor exercise.

As a freshman, he was third (9.55), then seventh as a sophomore (9.45) and tied for fourth as a junior (9.30).

O'Connor won the MSL meet for the first time this spring with a 9.45 and was fourth at the Conant sectional with a 9.3.
