Chicago police offer money for weapons

Even Chicago police Superintendent Jody Weis was shocked by what the department collected during its gun turn-in event.

More than 1,000 weapons were turned in during the program's first half-hour on Saturday -- including two hand grenades.

Weis wondered what anyone would need hand grenades for in Chicago.

The gun turn-in was being held at 22 locations across the city.

Police gave a prepaid credit card for each weapon that was turned in. They gave $100 for each assault weapon, $75 for guns and $10 for BB guns, air guns and replica guns.

Weis said he didn't know how much would be given for the grenades.

Police promised not to ask any questions about the guns or the people who turned them in. Police say all guns will be destroyed.
