Grand jury indicts man in Naperville theft of rare bird

A DuPage County grand jury indicted an Indiana man on charges he stole an exotic Macaw from a Naperville pet shop after hiding the bird under his coat.

A $100,000 arrest warrant for Michael D. Drogosz, 26, was issued for the Jan. 19 theft. Drogosz remains in custody in Starke County, Ind., however, on more serious charges after authorities said he opened fire on police attempting to serve him with a warrant in an unrelated burglary case.

Drogosz, who also goes by Drogos, is accused of stealing the green, 7-month-old female Severe Macaw named Sarah from the Petland store at 720 S. Route 59, near the Westfield Fox Valley shopping center.

Sarah is valued at about $1,600. Police returned the bird, unharmed, to the pet store after receiving a tip about Drogosz's involvement in the highly publicized theft.

No one was injured in the Starke County standoff, in which Drogosz is accused of firing several shots. Officers lobbed tear gas into the home, which started a fire and forced Drogosz out. He is charged with attempted murder and attempted aggravated battery, along with other felonies, and remains held in Indiana on a $2 million bond.

The DuPage County grand jury indicted Drogosz Tuesday, court records released Wednesday said. He faces up to five years in prison if convicted of felony theft.
