Manhunt on after shooting near NIU

Police say students likely not involved

DeKalb police are searching for a person that shot a 35-year-old man near the Northern Illinois University campus Tuesday night.

The shooting took place at an apartment complex that borders parts of the campus, said DeKalb Lt. Gary Spangler.

He said it was reported that a gun shot was fired at about 7 p.m. in the 900 block of Crane Drive, Building 4.

Police did not find anything in the area at the time. A short time later, Kishwaukee Community Hospital officials contacted police about a 35-year old man suffering gun shot wounds. Police said his injuries are not life threatening. Investigators say they have made "significant progress in the investigation."

Spangler said he expects to obtain a warrant for the shooter's arrest later today.

An initial campus alert posted on the NIU Web site Tuesday at 9 p.m. said police were looking for an African-American male in his late 20s to early 30s. The suspect is believed to have black braided hair and a thin mustache. He was wearing an oversized multicolored hoodie and was last seen walking from the scene, the warning stated.

Police asked that the campus community remain alert.

Spangler said he does not believe the shooting was gang related.

"And it doesn't look like there were students involved in the situation," Spangler said.
