Tuesday's Fox Valley roundup

Burlington Central's softball team may have lost one of the best pitchers in the area to Mackenzie Scott's graduation, but the Rockets' offense picked up Tuesday where it left off last season, when BC finished third at the Class 3A state tournament.

Central pounded out 14 hits and senior Jet Kein allowed just 2 earned runs as the Rockets opened the 2010 season with a 14-6 nonconference win over Sycamore.

The win is the 249th for BC coach Scot Sutherland, now in his 11th year in charge of the program.

Haley Albamonte (RBI), Abby Morrow (RBI) and sophomore Sara Kisch (2 triples, 3 RBI each had 3 hits to lead the Rockets Tuesday. Ashley Scheffler (2-for-4, 2B, RBI, SB), Emily Bell (3B), Katie Maleski (2-for-4, 3B, 2 RBI), Kein (2-for-4, RBI) and Cassie Warner (2-for-5, 4 RBI) each contributed to the Burlington Central offense as well.

Kein struck out six, walked just one and allowed 9 hits.

"The offense was just fine today but we have some work to do on defense," said Sutherland, whose team travels to Class 3A rival Kaneland today.

Marian Central 7, Hampshire 5: Katelyn Bruscato gave up 8 hits over 4 innings of work as the Whip-Purs fell to 0-3 on the season. Grace Jakubowski and Kristin Follman each had 2 hits and a double each for Hampshire.

Glenbard North 7, Elgin 1: Elgin (2-2) managed just 3 hits in falling to defending DuPage Valley Conference champion Glenbard North in a nonconference game. Hannah Perryman (2-1) suffered the pitching loss for the Maroons, allowing 6 hits and 4 earned runs in 5 innings of work. she struck out nine.
