Color guard winsThe Stevenson High School color guard won the short flag competition and finished fourth in lyrical flag at the TeamDance Illinois Regional at Prairie Ridge High School in Crystal Lake on Saturday. Both routines qualified the team for the finals in Peoria on March 7. Antioch kindergarten and first-grade registration:Dist. 34 registrationAntioch Elementary District 34 hosts registration for new kindergarten and first-grade students for the 2010-11 school year. Registration is at Hillcrest Elementary School, 433 E. Depot St., on Tuesday, March 16, 4 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday, March 17, 3 to 6 p.m. For kindergarten, the child must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2010. For details about fees and proof of residency requirements, call (847) 838-8001.Maple syrup timeLearn how sap from sugar maple trees is turned into sweet maple syrup during one-hour hikes at Ryerson Woods near Deerfield. The hikes are offered the first three weekends in March and are open to all ages. Participants will learn to identify sugar maple trees, pick those with the sweetest sap, follow the process from sap to syrup and taste the final product. The hikes run every half-hour from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays from March 6 through 20. Registration is required. Cost is $7 ($5 for Lake County residents).
