'Steel Magnolias' opens this weekend

The Geneva Underground Playhouse, 524 W. State St., will present the favorite, "Steel Magnolias," for two weekends in February.

The play, written by Robert Harling and turned into a popular movie, will be performed at 8 p.m. Feb. 19-20, 25-28, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21. There will be two performances on Saturday, Feb. 27, and the Thursday, Feb. 25 show will be a special "industry and student" night. Actors showing a headshot or resume and any students will be admitted for $10, although the show will be open to the public.

The show is directed by board member Nora Manca, and features, Jeni Dees, Jessica Keith, Kathy Richardson, Suzanne Reeves, Dona Mullen and Sharon Cuneo.

The show centers on Truvy's beauty parlor and women who regularly gather there. The action begins on the morning of Shelby's wedding to Jackson and covers events over the next three years, including Shelby's decision to have a child despite having Type 1 diabetes and the complications that result from the decision.

The play was first performed off-Broadway in 1987, and was turned into a popular movie in 1989. It was not produced on Broadway until 2005.

Tickets are $20, and $15 for seniors age 65 and older, and high school or college students with a school ID.
