Powers remains Dem committeeman in Barrington Twp.

Barrington Township Democratic Committeeman Bill Powers successfully defended his seat from challenger Peter Gutzmer Tuesday. Powers had 309 votes to Gutzmer's 265, for 53.8 percent of the total.

Gutzmer, 44, of Hoffman Estates, is a firefighter/paramedic, who was defeated in races against Republican Matt Murphy for 27th District state senator in 2006 and 2008.

Powers, of Barrington, first won the Democratic committeeman job on his third run for the office in 2002, when he defeated Aimee Forsberg, daughter of former Democratic committeeman and Barrington village president Ted Forsberg.

The frequent contests for control of the local party reveal a variety of opinions among the township's Democrats, even in such a strongly Republican area.
