Groups compete to supply food to pantry

The Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce and the Self-Help Closet & Pantry of Des Plaines are gearing up for the annual February Food Fight, when the chamber's board challenges other local organizations to see which group can collect the most food for the pantry during the month of February.

The pantry, founded in 1971 in Des Plaines, served about 1,200 residents in need in December.

Last year's event collected nearly 8,000 pounds of food, with the Des Plaines Rotary Club taking first place with 3,213 lbs. and the Kiwanis Club close behind with 3,035 lbs.

In addition to businesses, Des Plaines condominium associations, churches and local organization are invited to participate. To register or for information, contact Andrea Friedman at (847) 824-4200, or Debra Walusiak at (847) 337-1443.
