Warren gets tough draw at Willowbrook

It definitely wasn't the best of the draws for Warren's girls basketball team at the 20th annual McDonald's Shootout at Willowbrook High School in Villa Park.

Especially when the young Blue Devils found out they were going against one of the more experienced and talented teams in the Chicago area on Friday night.

Four of Thornton Fractional North's five senior starters are headed to Division I schools.

The Blue Devils had a difficult time staying with the Meteors from the opening tip and were showered with a 69-19 loss.

The Meteors (18-3) were led by Cincinnati-bound Jeanise Randolph with 20 points. Brittany Chester made five 3-pointers to add 15 points.

They also got 10 points from Dawn Luster (Indiana-Purdue Indianapolis), 6 points and 11 rebounds from Karisma Chapman (Alabama-Birmingham) and 4 points and 8 rebounds from Centrese McGee (Illinois).

"You hope at some point our girls were paying attention to how their girls were playing against them," Warren coach John Stanczykiewicz said. "(Thornton Fractional North) played hard and to their quickness, attacked the ball in all phases, getting rebounds, defensively and never let up.

"Out of this game, we got a chance to measure ourselves (against) girls who want to play college basketball."

The Blue Devils (9-11) found themselves down 10-0 right away, before getting their first basket midway through the first quarter.

"We came out tentative and it was a disappointing game for me," Stanczykiewicz said. "After we got down, I saw the girls hang their heads and you can't do that.

"We did the best we could out there. Even their own coach (Tim Zasada) mentioned that they don't shoot that well from the perimeter. It was one of those nights."

TF North (18-3) led 30-4 after the opening quarter. The Meteors made 12-of-20 shots from the field and 6-of-7 three-pointers and forced Warren into 10 of its 30 turnovers.

The Meteors ended up with 10 3-pointers in 19 attempts.

"I think (Warren) ran into a perfect storm," Zasada said. "We were hitting everything and we had multiple girls getting in on it. We've got a way of feeding off each other and we were hot.

"Our defensive pressure took its toll and we got (Warren) to throw the ball away a lot."

Morgan Garrett led the Blue Devils with 4 points.
