Streamwood comes back to dump Lake Park

The last thing Streamwood boys basketball coach Tim Jones wanted heading into an 11-day break before its next game was a three-game losing streak.

The Sabres won't have to worry about that. They scored 8 of the game's final 10 points Friday night to beat Lake Park, 43-40, in an Upstate Eight Conference game in Streamwood.

"We needed a win. There's no question about it," Jones said. "We executed down the stretch when we needed to."

Neither team got into sync offensively thanks to turnovers and offensive fouls. The teams combined for 43 turnovers, several coming because of moving screens or charges, and 41 fouls. Three players fouled out and Lancers coach Josh Virostko was given a technical foul.

"It was ugly," Virostko said. "Streamwood fought through all the adversity. Our kids couldn't deal with all the distractions and that cost them."

The Sabres (6-11, 2-3) led 13-6 after the first quarter as Lake Park turned the ball over eight times and shot 1-for-5 from the field. The Lancers (8-7, 2-2) took their first lead, 18-17, with 3:45 left in the second quarter on a pair of Adam Hensen free throws. The teams traded the lead three more times before the Sabres took a 23-22 lead at halftime.

Lake Park took a 31-30 lead and the momentum into the fourth quarter after Hansen banked in a shot from midcourt at the buzzer.

The Lancers led 38-35 after a 3-point play from Matt Drufke with 3:41 left. The Sabres' Marcus Greene tied the game on the ensuing trip down the floor with a 3-pointer from the left corner.

"He can shoot the ball," Jones said of Greene, who struggled with his shot most of the game. "He's one of the better jump shooter and free-throw shooters. He does have a nice shot."

Marcus Lewis and Robert Siwek each hit a pair of free throws as the Sabres to increase the lead to 42-38. Drufke's free throws with 58 seconds left made it 42-40. Streamwood's Jerrold Ofiana hit a free throw with 44 seconds remaining. Hansen missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 10 seconds left, but the Lancers got the ball back with 2 seconds left. But they couldn't get off a good shot before the buzzer.

Derrick King led Streamwood with 15 points. Lewis added 9.

Drufke scored 20 points to lead the Lancers, but the senior was the only player to score in the fourth quarter. Hansen finished with 11.
