Elgin set to honor Dr. King

The Elgin Human Relations Commission and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Committee will kick off a weekend of events celebrating the life of the late civil rights leader at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16 with a prayer breakfast at Elgin Community College Business Conference Center, 1700 Spartan Drive.

Keynote speaker Pastor Dexter K. Ball, founder of Faithwalk Harvest Center in Carpentersville; and Elgin Mayor Ed Schock will speak and recognize Humanitarian Award winners from throughout the community. Tickets are $15 and available at City Hall, 150 Dexter Court.

The celebration will continue at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17 at the Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way, Elgin. As a special honor for the 25th anniversary of the event, the guest speaker will be 14th Congressional District Rep. Bill Foster. Entertainment groups from Elgin and other communities will honor Dr. King through song and dance; the program will include art and essay awards and scholarship presentations.

The Dr. King celebration at the Hemmens is free.
