Algonquin man charged with selling cocaine to undercover cops

A 44-year-old Algonquin man was behind bars in the McHenry County jail Wednesday, facing six felony charges stemming from allegations he twice dealt thousands of dollars in cocaine to undercover police.

Michael A. Cherbak, of the 900 block of Mohican Drive, was arrested at his home Tuesday night by officers with the North Central Narcotics Task Force, who say he locked himself in a bathroom and tried to flush away some of the evidence before his arrest.

Cherbak faces two counts of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, Class X felonies that allege he sold police 28.3 grams of cocaine on Dec. 1 and 60.1 grams of cocaine Dec. 10. He also was charged with obstructing justice, three counts of possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor charges of possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia.

During the arrest, charges state, authorities discovered in Cherbak's home another 6.9 grams of cocaine, 8 grams of marijuana and a pipe for smoking it.

He later was taken to the county jail, where he remained Wednesday on a $150,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 22.

Arrested with him Tuesday night was Jody A. Martin, 43, of the same address, on charges of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. She is free after posting $1,000 bond Wednesday. Cherbak identifies Martin in court documents as his live-in girlfriend.
