Forest preserve adds land:Another 73 acres will join the Lake County Forest Preserve District's roster. Commissioners voted Tuesday to approve: the purchase of 59 acres south of Nippersink Road and west of Fairfield Road to be combined with previous purchases to create a new forest preserve in western Lake County; a 9-acre addition to Grant Woods with frontage along Rollins Road; and, a 5-acre addition to Grainger Woods Conservation Preserve on Everett Road east of St. Mary's Road. The total purchase price for the parcels was about $3.7 million and are contingent on a closing in 60 to 90 days.Felony traffic charges:A Hainesville man could have his vehicle seized by police after being charged with a felony driving while license suspended Wednesday. Round Lake Park Police Chief George Filenko said Charles Davis, 29, of the 100 block of W. Belvidere Road, was spotted driving his 2002 silver Mercedes-Benz at Route 120 and Hainesville Road by an officer with prior knowledge of Davis' driving record. Davis was arrested and charged with felony driving while license suspended, Filenko said. Under the law, a person issued a felony driving while license suspended ticket could have their vehicle seized by police, he said. Davis was arrested at six previous traffic stops in the past, he said. Davis was also issued a misdemeanor charge of possession of less than 2.5 grams of cannabis, Filenko said. He was transported to bond court.Scholarships available:State Sen. Michael Bond of Grayslake is accepting applications for Illinois General Assembly scholarships to be awarded for the fall 2010 and spring/summer 2011 semesters. High school seniors and college students returning for their sophomore and junior years can apply for the one-year, full tuition scholarships. Eight scholarships will be awarded to applicants in Bond's 31st Senate District. All applications are reviewed by an independent advisory committee. Recipients are chosen based on academic achievement, activity in public and civic affairs, and demonstrated financial need. The scholarships can only be used at state-supported universities. The deadline to submit is March 24.Gurnee outdoor rinks open:Four Gurnee Park District outdoor ice skating are now open and will be available through mid-February, weather permitting. Temperatures must average about 20 degree for a minimum of five consecutive days, with 5 to 7 inches of ground frost, for ideal rink conditions. Park district employees perform periodic sweeping and ice resurfacing. The rinks are at Betty Russell, Esper Petersen, Christine Thompson and University parks.
